While the guests managed to pull off a 165-run win in the series opener, the second game ended in a draw, and the Indians had to ultimately settle with a 1-0 series win.

Notably, the Indian team declared their innings at 503-9, with two batters, Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel’s incredible hundreds.
They also managed to bundle Sri Lanka out at 290, and asked them for a follow-on. Though they were confident of wrapping up the game with the considerable lead they had, the hosts put up 429-9 in the second innings, owing to some brilliant knocks, including Pasindu Sooriyabandara’s 92 and Sonal Dinusha’s 133, to draw the game.

According to latest reports, Test captain Shubman Gill wanted to declare India’s innings before tea on Day 2 rather than carry on until the end of the day. However, head coach Gambhir was against the idea and wanted Dhruv Jurel to complete his century. According to CricBlogger, this delayed the declaration. While Jurel eventually reached his ton, the additional time spent had an impact on India’s bowling effort. With Sri Lanka following on, there was too little time left in the match for the hosts to return and bat again, giving the bowlers some rest.
“There is growing concern that the coach is overruling the captain on too many occasions, and that appears to be happening far too often,” a source told CricBlogger. While Gill is still young in the leadership domain, it becomes important for the coach and the management to space to make his own decisions. The disconnect between top two people on the helm becomes a more important topic than any win as of now.
