Tanzid Hasan has emerged as one of Bangladesh’s biggest positives in the ongoing Test against Australia in Darwin. The left-handed opener produced a remarkable innings on Friday. He scored 101 runs from 197 deliveries during Bangladesh’s first innings. His century was the first by a Bangladeshi batter in a Test match on Australian soil. The milestone came in only his second Test appearance. Hasan had earlier made his Test debut against Pakistan in May. He also has 40 ODI appearances and 53 T20Is for Bangladesh. He has scored 1044 runs at an average of 27.47 (and one century against Pakistan), and 1331 runs at an average of 28.31 in T20Is.

Hasan played with patience against Australia’s experienced bowling attack. He shared a 102-run partnership with Mominul Haque before adding another important stand with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. He reached his maiden Test fifty on Friday before eventually completing his century. His innings helped Bangladesh build a strong position after Australia were dismissed for only 198 on the opening day. Hasan Mahmud claimed six wickets for 55 runs during that collapse. Bangladesh eventually reached 351 for six by stumps on day two. The visitors held a 153-run lead, putting them in a commanding position. The 25-year old’s composed performance has therefore strengthened his credentials as a promising long-term opening option for Bangladesh across formats.

Tanzid Hasan’s journey from watching cricket through a window to making Test match history against Australia

Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s journey in cricket began in Bogura, where his fascination with the sport developed during childhood. An older boy in his neighbourhood regularly played cricket, and Tanzid would watch him from his window. Eventually, his curiosity became impossible to control. “An older boy in my area spent almost the entire day playing cricket and I watched him from the window,” the U-19 player recalled.

His parents wanted him to focus on studies and hoped he would become a doctor or engineer. However, cricket had already become his biggest passion. By Class VIII, he was so focused on the sport that his studies suffered. His father became upset and even asked him to leave home temporarily. His mother later supported his dream and helped him join a cricket academy in Rajshahi.

The Bangladesh player then began building his career through local and age-group cricket. He earned attention while playing for Uttara Sporting Club in the Dhaka First Division Cricket League during the 2017-18 season. His two centuries helped him earn an Under-17 selection. He later scored 371 runs in the following season and broke into Bangladesh’s Under-19 setup. His development continued at the Bangla Track Academy.

Former Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud recognised his attacking ability early. “I knew he had potential,” Mahmud said. “He is good at playing the cut and pull shots. He is also good at drives and over the top shots.” Hasan eventually became part of Bangladesh’s victorious 2020 Under-19 World Cup squad.
