Australia captain Pat Cummins identified the opening day as the key moment behind his side’s nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test at Darwin. Australia were dismissed for just 198 before Bangladesh responded with 426, taking a commanding 228-run lead. Reflecting on where the match slipped away, the Australian skipper said, “Probably that day one. You know, I thought our preparation was pretty much spot on. I thought it was excellent. So, no excuses. They played really well.” He added, “I thought the day one wicket was doing a little bit early, but obviously got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then, just couldn't penetrate with the ball.”
The experienced Australian leader gave full credit to Bangladesh for their performance, acknowledging that his team struggled to recover after falling behind. “Yeah, they did. I think they outplayed us in all facets, really. I thought they were really patient and quite disciplined. And, yeah, once we were behind, it was really hard to get back,” Cummins said.
The defeat leaves Australia 1-0 down in the two-Test series, while Bangladesh have secured their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil. The second Test is scheduled to begin in Mackay on August 22.
