Indian wicket-keeper middle order batsman Sanju Samson has failed to make use of the small opportunities that he got in the T20I series against West Indies but he has a good record in ODIs. He has played 13 ODI matches and scored 390 runs (12 inns) at a batting average of 55.71.
Sanju Samson despite being the skipper of Rajasthan Royals hasn’t been able to cement his place in the national side but can he make the cut into the WC squad? Here, we will have a look at some of the reasons why he might get picked for the WC 2023 team.
1. Need for an extra wicket-keeping option:
Sanju Samson might get an opportunity to play as a reserve wicket-keeper in the ODI squad due to the absence of Rishabh Pant. Although KL Rahul is expected to don the wicket-keeping gloves, India have a choice of having a reserve wicket-keeper in the form of Ishan Kishan (or) Sanju Samson as a second choice.
Ishan Kishan hasn’t been impressive with the gloves behind the stump, hence Sanju Samson might get a nod ahead of him due to his experience. Also, Ishan Kishan doesn’t compete for a spot in the middle order, unlike Sanju Samson.

2. Providing an extra impetus as a middle-order batsman:
India would be tempted to select an extra middle-order batsman as KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are coming to play for their side after a long time. Suryakumar Yadav’s form in recent times has been very poor with the bat thus they may look to include a solid batsman like Sanju Samson who has done well in the middle order.
Sanju Samson has been a very good batter in sub-continent pitch and he may play a key role with the bat as the matches are set to be hosted in India.

3. Puts team over his self milestones:
Sanju Samson always plays the aggressive brand of cricket where he focuses on getting impactful runs which are beneficial to the team to change the momentum of the side rather than playing conservatively like Ishan Kishan (or) KL Rahul which doesn’t help the team in death overs of the match.
Samson has been a versatile batsman in this format and he plays spin bowling very well which helps his side to cross the winning line while playing in Indian pitches.
