The Kolkata Knight Riders are going to face the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 league with many loopholes in their structure. Four losses and one rain-affected match out of five have kept KKR at the bottom. The main areas of concern for KKR include the inconsistent performance of the pace bowlers, the lack of confidence in the middle-order batsmen, and the absence of a defined role for the top-order players. Given that the GT team has a well-settled structure, the KKR may not be able to overcome these shortcomings.

On the other hand, the Gujarat Titans' bowling lineup comprises players whose expertise lies in highlighting these weaknesses. The bowling partnership between Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj has earned them 25 Powerplay wickets this year, allowing GT to have the upper hand in the initial stages. With Jason Holder taking four wickets with an economy rate of just 24 and Prasidh Krishna delivering four wickets with an economy rate of 28, the pace attack seems balanced.

1. Unstable Top Order

KKR’s batting lineup is still unclear. Ajinkya Rahane has been the most consistent batsman for KKR with 152 runs in five matches, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi has scored the same number. But due to constant tinkering in the top-order lineup, KKR have not been able to build momentum there. Finn Allen has only scored 81 runs in five matches despite coming in from an impressive Big Bash season. Moreover, KKR have also tried opening with Sunil Narine, who usually bats at the lower end.

The GT bowlers excel against teams whose players lack defined roles. Since Siraj and Rabada will attack straightaway in the death overs and Washington Sundar is also on hand as a matchup player, Gujarat can take advantage of this weakness.

2. Middle-Order Chaos

However, KKR's middle order batsmen have been inconsistent. Cameron Green, who has been signed for ₹25.20 crore, has only scored 56 runs in his five innings played so far, which include 18, 2, 4, 32* and 0. He has also been poor with his bowling figures as he has been giving away more than 11 runs per over. The performance of Rinku Singh has also been a matter of concern. After two innings of 33 and 35, he has been scoring poorly in the other two matches with 4 and 6 runs respectively. After scoring five sixes in the final game of 2023, he has failed to deliver match-winning performances.

The fast bowlers like Rabada and Siraj, as well as the spinners like Rashid Khan, will be perfect against such a batting lineup.

3. Unsettled Pace Bowling Attack

The biggest problem for KKR right now is their fast bowlers. Due to injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, the team had to change their plans even before the season started. Matheesha Pathirana, who was signed by KKR at ₹18 crore, has not played any match because of poor fitness. These statistics tell the story: Their fast bowlers are conceding 10.17 runs per over, while the average runs conceded in each innings is 201. Vaibhav Arora has taken 10 wickets in 11 games, but he has had an economy of 10.26, which is very costly for them. He conceded 48 runs against RCB without getting a single wicket in four overs.

This gives GT a clear advantage. Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler can go after the fast bowlers in the initial six overs to take the game away from KKR.
