England had another poor outing with the bat in the 2026 WT20 as they struggled their way to 146/9 at the end of the first innings against Sri Lanka. The match was being played at Pallekele which is usually a good batting surface and in this WT20 it has been the third highest scoring ground so there were no excuses for England batters. After being put into bat first, England opener Jos Buttler continued his poor form as he struggled his way to 7 of 14 balls before being dismissed. Bethell fell cheaply for three while Banton lost his wicket for six as England were in deep trouble. Harry Brook could only get 14 while Sam Curran scored 11 as it was an all-round batting failure. Phil Salt was the only player who looked good and he finished with 62. Will Jacks provided them a decent finish but it was still an underwhelming total. Fans on twitter started making memes and there was plenty of criticism for this lackluster approach from England. Let us look at how twitter reacted to this batting performance.
Former Indian cricketer Ravi Ashwin also took it to twitter saying that England are refusing to play the brand of cricket they are capable of playing and he noted that there is uncertainty in the camp. Here is what his tweet read.
Some of the users criticized that England might be the worst players of spin and many others questioned where the intent was and it has been missing. The talent pool in England was also brought up and there are questions as to why they have declined.
This must be the worst spin playing team from England ever. Half the time they don’t know whether to play forward or on backfoot. This indecisiveness is baffling. And they just throw their bat at everything. Wonder what the batting coach is doing. Playing on slow pitches…

England's batting order is really struggling against Sri Lanka! 🏏 Jos Buttler 7(14), Jacob Bethell 3(4), Tom Banton 6(7), and Harry Brook 14(7) haven't found their rhythm. Phil Salt is fighting hard to build a respectable total. #SLvsENG #ENGvsSL #T20WorldCup pic.twitter.com/R2HakgiumP

It has been a disappointing performance from England and there are plenty of questions being raised about batting depth on social media. Many fans also took it to Brendon McCulum, who is the head coach of England and asked him to resign.
England are grouped with Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand for the Super 8 stage. They have scored a below par total and will now depend on their bowlers to save them. A loss here could be a huge blow to their semi final hopes.
