Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star Virat Kohli turned back the clock during the IPL 2026 match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The 37-year-old batting icon grabbed a sensational diving catch to dismiss Suryansh Shedge off the bowling of Suyash Sharma, helping RCB comfortably defend their total of 222/4 and become the first team to qualify for the IPL 2026 Playoffs. In the 10th over of Punjab’s chase, PBKS batsman Suryansh Shedge lofted a flighted delivery from spinner Suyash Sharma toward the long-off boundary. Standing at long-off, Kohli anticipated the miscue perfectly, instantly sprinting horizontally across the turf.

Realising the ball was falling short, Kohli hurled himself parallel to the ground in a full-extension, horizontal dive, snatching the ball clean just inches off the grass. The internet erupted in awe because New Zealand's Glenn Phillips is widely regarded as the most athletic airborne fielder in modern cricket. Seeing a 37-year-old mimic that level of elasticity caused total disbelief. The extreme commitment came with a cost. Right after securing the sensational catch, Kohli briefly walked off the field to get treatment for a finger injury sustained during the hard landing.

Punjab Kings lose consecutive 6th match, this time against Royal Challengers Bengaluru

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) indeed suffered their 6th consecutive loss of the season, falling to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 23 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. This devastating defeat completely halted what was once a highly promising IPL 2026 campaign for Punjab. Under head coach Ricky Ponting, Punjab Kings began the tournament on absolute fire, remaining unbeaten in their first 7 matches (6 wins, 1 No Result) to comfortably sit at the top of the points table. Following that peak, the team completely lost its momentum, dropping 6 games in a row to freeze at 13 points from 13 matches.

With only one league match remaining against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 23, PBKS no longer controls its own destiny and needs a massive mathematical miracle to sneak into the top four. Shreyas Iyer noted that losing the Powerplays on both sides of the ball cost them the match. They leaked 61 runs in the bowling Powerplay, and then collapsed to a disastrous 19/3 within the first 4 overs while chasing 223. Despite a roaring counter-attack from Shashank Singh (56 off 27 balls), the top-order collapse left the middle order with too much ground to cover against a disciplined RCB bowling attack led by Rasikh Salam (3/36). Meanwhile, RCB became the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2026 Playoffs, riding high on Virat Kohli's masterclass and an incredibly athletic fielding display.
