Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga officially ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The leg-spinner, regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most impactful T20 players, will miss the remainder of the World Cup after failing to recover in time.

Hasaranga’s absence comes as a huge blow for Sri Lanka, who were banking heavily on his experience, wicket-taking ability, and all-round contribution in the shortest format of the game.

Wanindu Hasaranga Injury

Wanindu Hasaranga picked up a hamstring injury shortly before the start of the tournament, which immediately put his participation in doubt. Following medical assessments and scans, the team management confirmed that the injury was serious enough to rule him out completely. With the World Cup schedule packed and recovery timelines uncertain, Sri Lanka Cricket took the decision to withdraw him from the squad.

The injury setback means Hasaranga will not take part in any of Sri Lanka’s remaining matches in the competition.

Who will replace Wanindu Hasaranga

Hasaranga is not just Sri Lanka’s lead spinner but also one of their biggest match-winners in T20 cricket. His ability to pick up crucial wickets in the middle overs, control the run rate, and break partnerships makes him invaluable, especially in high-pressure World Cup matches. It will be interesting to see who will replace Wanindu Hasaranga.
