
Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar provided a moment of brilliance on the field to dismiss Jacob Bethell in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham. England had a great start as they raced to 61/0, with both openers looking well set. India were yet to pick up a wicket, and in the 13th over, it took a stunning piece of fielding to give them their first breakthrough.
Gurnoor Brar bowled a back-of-a-length delivery into the pitch. Bethell picked the length early as he swivelled across to play the pull, nailed the shot, but failed to pick the gap. The Indian all-rounder ran in from the deep, slid forward, went with soft hands, and completed a fine catch to send off the English opener on 14 runs in 31 deliveries. The Indian fans in the crowd were delighted as the visitors finally broke the opening stand.
Washington Sundar has been known as a very safe fielder, and he showed a bit of his magic on the field once again. It was not an easy catch, and the fact that Sundar ran in and managed to grab the ball made it a brilliant effort. Gurnoor Brar makes inroads as India claw back into the game after Sundar's catch
Indian pacer Gurnoor Brar, who had a tough start to the game after conceding 27 runs in his first two overs, made a great comeback. In his third over, he picked up the wicket of Jacob Bethell thanks to a stunning catch from Sundar. In the same over, Ben Duckett also lost his wicket. England collapsed from 61/0 to 62/2 in the 13th over. It was an excellent comeback from the Indian pacer, who bowled back of a length at good pace and created opportunities.
England had a cautious start in the powerplay, with Jacob Bethell struggling to get going. Ben Duckett looked positive, but England came through the powerplay without much damage. However, a brilliant piece of fielding from Sundar created an opening into the batting lineup, and England lost the wicket of Duckett in the same over. Jasprit Bumrah then returned to the attack and picked up the wicket of Harry Brook as India struck three times in the space of a few overs.
