Delhi Capitals’ newest sensation Sameer Rizvi received a standing ovation from the team’s camp after nearly missing his century against Mumbai Indians. The Capitals were up against the five-time IPL champions at home, Arun Jaitley Stadium, on Saturday, April 4. After letting their counterparts bat first, the hosts got a modest target of 163. In return, the home team got off to a horrible start as they lost their key players KL Rahul and Nitish Rana in the first two overs.

However, just when the game started to slip away from the home favorites, Pathum Nissanka gave stability to his side with a 30-ball-44. Later, Sameer Rizvi, who came in as an impact player in the place of Mukesh Kumar, went on to play a blistering 90 run knock off 51 balls, combining seven boundaries and seven maximums. Though he fell short of a well-deserving century, the 22-year-old received a standing ovation by teammates while walking back to pavilion.

Sameer Rizvi named Player of the Match for match-winning knock against MI

Rizvi was named Player of the Match for his brilliant match-winning knock that played a key role in guiding the side to their second consecutive win. Talking about his performance, the young lad said, “Like our practice sessions before the match, practice matches, so the coaches backed me by saying I will bat at number 4 this season. And you have to play your game according to the situation. Like you played according to the conditions.”

He added, “If you play at a particular venue then you know how to play, our state team plays here. So we have played a lot of matches. So that thing was helping. No sir, as I went, I thought that I will play a little positive approach. But as soon as in the next over, two wickets fell, the situation changed completely. So I tried to talk to Stubbs.”

Notably, this was Rizvi’s second consecutive Player of the Match Award in the IPL 2026 season.
