Sherfane Rutherford made it to the history books by scoring a much needed knock to strengthen West Indies’ credentials against England. He stood tall against England’s tremendous bowling unit and took West Indies to a defendable total at the end of the first innings.Rutherford helped his side rebuild and get to a score where they can go toe-to-toe against the three lions. His powerful innings was a glimpse of how important he is for the West Indies in the middle order. His game reading ability came in very handy for the Windies in this game and helped them set a target of 197 for England to chase. The three lions’ bowling lineup came out all guns blazing with the new ball and sent the Windies’ openers back to the pavilion.

England picked up wickets in quick succession and mounted pressure on the West Indies. Shemron Hetmyer and Roston Chase built a small partnership before Hetmyer was sent back. Rutherford constructed a well built innings with Rovman Powell and achieved a 50 run partnership. He replicated the same after Powell’s departure with Jason Holder.

Holder and Rutherford fired West Indies to 196/6 and shifted the momentum towards them. Rutherford played a key role in helping the West Indies recover from the early damage. He played safe and rotated the strike to avoid any kind of pressure. His presence of mind coupled with his ability to run the game helped West Indies turn the tie into their favour.

 

 

Rutherford scored 76 runs over 42 balls with an astonishing strike rate of more than 180. His innings included two fours and seven sixes making it one of the most entertaining innings of the 2026 World Cup so far. He brought up his half century in just 29 balls with a brilliant six against Jamie Overton. Rutherford took on Jofra and Archer and Jamie Overton in the death over and guided his side to a momentous finish at the Wankhede Stadium.
