Following India’s 2-1 bilateral T20I series loss to England, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana identified the failure to bowl enough dot balls as the critical mistake India cannot afford to repeat in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Speaking at the post-match press conference after England chased down a target of 181 to secure a six-wicket victory in Taunton, Mandhana emphasized that India's inability to build defensive pressure allowed England to recover from an early collapse of 35/3.
Key takeaways from Mandhana's assessment:
Lack of Dot Balls: India started strongly with the ball but failed to sustain pressure. Kranti Gaud and Arundhati Reddy had already set the tone for India as they dismissed three wickets and were in a strong position. However, the resilience of Alice Capsey and Heather Knight built a patient innings. Capsey scored 83 and was eventually dismissed but the 137 runs partnership changed the game for the hosts. Knight remained invested at 70 runs and secured victory for her team. "We definitely started extremely well with the ball, (reducing England to) 35 for 3. I wouldn't really take anything away from the partnership they had. I think they played really good cricketing shots. In hindsight, we would have been able to build pressure with a few dot balls, but we were not able to do that”.
World Cup Focus Over Hype: Mandhana downplayed the hyper-fixation on India’s high-profile World Cup opener against Pakistan scheduled for June 14 in Birmingham. She urged the team and fans to shift focus toward winning the tournament in its entirety rather than over-hyping a single match.
Batting Positives: Despite her own quiet series with the bat, Mandhana highlighted major silver linings. Crucially, captain Harmanpreet Kaur returned to peak form with a brilliant 40-ball 56 under pressure, which Mandhana noted is a massive boost for India’s middle order heading into the global tournament. "She batted amazingly well. Harman, when she is at her best, is a delight to watch. She played all over the ground. It's a really important innings under pressure, especially when we needed that knock to get us to 180+," Mandhana stated.
