At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has quickly become one of the hottest topics in Indian cricket. This talented young batsman from Bihar is on the brink of making his senior debut for India after securing a spot in the national T20I squad. Along with his first Team India jersey, he received another special honor - being given the No. 3 shirt. This number holds a heartfelt story tied to his mother’s advice. Indian Cricket legends like - Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina, who have also donned this jersey number adds more significance to Sooryavanshi’s jersey.
Sooryavanshi earned his place in the Indian team through a string of impressive performances across various formats. He shone in India’s Under-19 setup, played a pivotal role in their U-19 World Cup victory, dominated IPL 2026 by clinching the Orange Cap with a staggering 776 runs, and wowed everyone again in the India A ODI Tri-Series with his explosive batting. These standout performances caught the selectors' attention, leading to his swift promotion to the senior squad.
Before joining Team India, Sooryavanshi sported jersey No. 12 while playing for the Rajasthan Royals. However, he made the switch to No. 3 after a simple yet meaningful suggestion from his mother, Aarti. She pointed out that the digits in 12 add up to three and believed that the single-digit number could bring him good fortune.
The young cricketer embraced this idea and continued wearing No. 3 during the Rising Stars Asia Cup and the India A ODI Tri-Series. While he had previously donned No. 18 for the India Under-19 team, he now embarks on his senior international journey with a number that holds personal significance and is gaining importance.
International challenges await for young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
The young talent has made it into India’s squads for the T20I series against Ireland and England, and he’s also been selected for the Asian Games in 2026. India kicks off the new T20 cycle with two matches in Belfast against Ireland, followed by a five-match series in England this July. Later in the year, Sooryavanshi will have another chance to shine on a big stage during the Asian Games.
If he gets the nod for the starting XI in the first T20I against Ireland, Sooryavanshi will make history. At just 15 years and 91 days old, he would become the youngest male cricketer to debut for India, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-held record of 16 years and 205 days from 1989. As a left-handed opener, he’s also likely to take the first strike if chosen. This debut would be yet another milestone in a career that’s already seen some incredible achievements at such a young age.
