Olympic medalist and India's star women's wrestler Sakshi Malik won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after defeating reigning U23 world champion Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Canada. The Indian wrestler won the gold in the women's freestyle 62 kg wrestling event on Friday, August 5.

The Canadian took the early lead of four points by forcing Malik on the ground twice in the first round of the final event. However, Sakshi made a sensational comeback in the second round by forcing her opponent on the ground and snatched four points before pinning her down to clinch the gold medal.

This is the first gold medal for Sakshi Malik at the Commonwealth Games after winning silver in the 2014 Games at Glasgow and bronze in the CWG 2018 at the Gold Coast.

Earlier, Bajrang Punia had defeated Canada's McNeil Lachlan in the men's freestyle 65 Kg weight category to clinch gold for India.
