Newcastle United’s pursuit of Yoane Wissa has been a focal point of their transfer window, driven by the reported need to bolster their attacking options. It is following the departure of Callum Wilson on a free transfer to West Ham United and the uncertainty surrounding star striker Alexander Isak. It is also said that Isak publicly expressing his desire to leave Newcastle via a controversial Instagram post on Tuesday, claiming the club had “broken promises”, has reportedly complicated matters for manager Eddie Howe. In such a scenario, the Magpies are further jolted as the transfer window approaches its deadline.

Brentford have reportedly turned down an improved £40 million bid from Newcastle United for their striker Yoane Wissa, intensifying the ongoing transfer saga surrounding the 28-year-old DR Congo international. According to the reports, the Magpies’ latest offer, comprising a £35 million initial fee plus £5 million in performance-related add-ons, was rejected on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, with Brentford holding firm on their valuation, reportedly exceeding £50 million. However, reports also suggest Brentford have raised their demands to £60 million, citing concerns about their ability to sign a suitable replacement so late in the transfer window.

Duo of Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbuemo scored 39 of Brentford’s 66 league goals last season

Yoane Wissa had a stellar 2024-25 Premier League campaign, where he scored 19 goals from open play, which has reportedly made him a sought-after commodity. His 49 goals and 13 assists in 149 appearances for Brentford since joining from Lorient in 2021 highlight his importance to the Bees, particularly after Mbeumo’s £71 million departure. The duo accounted for 39 of Brentford’s 66 league goals last season. Brentford’s recent £42.5 million signing of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth was speculated to pave the way for Wissa’s transfer, but manager Keith Andrews later clarified that Ouattara was signed as Mbeumo’s replacement, not Wissa’s.

Newcastle’s urgency to secure Wissa can be said to stem from their failure to land other targets, including Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, who is reportedly nearing a £79 million move to Liverpool, and speculations around Chelsea’s Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

Reportedly, the Magpies have also been linked with Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, but their focus remains on Wissa, with personal terms reportedly not an issue. But now, Brentford’s reported rejection has left the deal in limbo. With less than two weeks remaining in the transfer window, it would be interesting to watch how the transfer saga of Yoane Wissa unfolds.
