Anthony Martial, the former Manchester United striker, has joined the Mexican club Monterrey on a two-year contract to play in the Liga MX with an option for another year. The 29-year-old was a part of AEK Athens in Greece last season, scoring seven goals in 19 league appearances for them after leaving Manchester United when his contract with them expired in 2024.
Notably, Anthony Martial joined Manchester United in 2015 after the English club shelled out a whopping £36 million to Monaco, to make him world’s most expensive teenage footballer at the time. During his nine-year stay at the Red Devils, the Frenchman played 317 matches, scoring 90 goals and providing 54 assists, and he went on to win the UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FA Community Shield.
Before the confirmation about Anthony Martial joining Mexican club Monterrey, he missed the last seven matches of AEK Athens in Greece with his last appearance happening against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the UEFA Conference League in July of this year. The first match of the Frenchman for Monterrey could be against Queretaro in the Liga MX during their visit to Estadio Corregidora on Sunday, September 14.
Also, following the completion of the move to Monterrey, Anthony Martial will be sharing the same dressing room with Sergio Ramos, the former Spain and Real Madrid defender. It will now be very interesting to see if the 29-year-old will be able to deliver consistent performances in the Mexican club scene this season, to give himself the best possible chance to represent France in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the North American continent next year.
