Harry Maguire, the England defender, who is also a former captain of Manchester United, said in a recent interview that it would be “silly” to leave the club at this stage of his career. The 32-year-old, who is currently in the final year of his contract at Manchester United after the club triggered an extension this past January, is looked upon as one of the leaders of the team by manager Ruben Amorim.
Notably, the contract extension for Maguire came at a time earlier this year when Amorim had alluded to how his squad was “starved of leaders”. As per the report published in BBC Sport, the England international revealed the interest from clubs to sign him in the ongoing summer transfer window, but the club decided to not let him leave despite him being in the final year of his current contract.
Harry Maguire was quoted as saying on the matter, “Last year, the clause was in their hands. There was no option for me there. There was no talking. It was just they activated it and it got extended. I'm pretty sure the club made it clear this summer that I can't leave on any terms. A couple of clubs enquired and I think they got a quick response. Moreover, the 32-year-old will be able to start talking with clubs in January 2026 about possibly striking a deal elsewhere if he doesn’t sign a new contract at Manchester United.
I have something in my mind about what I want to do and where I want to be: Maguire on his Man Utd future
It is important to remember that West Ham United did come calling for Harry Maguire in 2023, but he said no to them despite Manchester United accepting a bid for him. In regards to his future at the club, the Englishman remarked, “I'm sure over the next few months we'll have to have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend. Obviously, I have something in my mind about what I want to do and where I want to be.”
“I don't want to put it out there to everybody but it's an amazing club to play for and you'd be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could,” he added.
