Japan and the Netherlands battled to an enthralling 2-2 draw in their opening Group F match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville gave the Dutch the lead twice, but Japan responded with goals from Keito Nakamura and an 88th-minute equalizer credited to Daichi Kamada.

The Dutch side, managing 60% of the possession, initiated the breakthrough in the 50th minute. A fine cross from Ryan Gravenberch met the head of Virgil van Dijk, who expertly powered it past Japanese keeper Zion Suzuki. Japan responded swiftly; six minutes later, winger Keito Nakamura drifted inside from the edge of the area and fired a deflected shot to equalize.

The Netherlands restored their advantage in the 63rd minute when Crysencio Summerville cut loose and launched a sensational curling strike into the bottom corner. Just as the Dutch looked to seal the win, Japan's relentless fighting spirit paid off. In the 88th minute, a late corner kick found Daichi Kamada, whose header deflected past Bart Verbruggen to secure a dramatic point for the Samurai Blue.
