One of the greats of the game of football, Lionel Messi, who hogged limelight with his brace in Argentina’s home game win against Venezuela in 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday, hinted at his final appearance at home. However, the social media was flooded with fans speculating Messi’s final home game for the 2022 FIFA World Cup champions, but the 38-year-old has finally broken silence on the same.
After the fixture, the Albiceleste captain remained tight-lipped about his return to the World Cup, which will be held next year across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. "As I've said before, I don't think I'll play another World Cup. At my age, it's only logical to think I might not," Messi told, as quoted from Goal.com.
I’ll see how I feel: Lionel Messi’s fitness to decide FIFA World Cup 2026 participation
Hours after the news spread like wild fire of what was his final appearance at home, he was once again put to question on his future. Speaking regarding his participation in next year’s FIFA World Cup, Messi expressed uncertainty but excitement too, stating, “I’m excited, eager.” “It’s day by day, feeling the sensations. If I feel good, I enjoy it; if not, I’d rather not be there,” he further added, noting that the tournament is still nine months away and there a “long time” to decide on it.
The 38-year-old further added that his upcoming months will decide his participation. “Day by day, I try to feel good and, above all, be honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it. But when I don't, honestly, I don't enjoy it - and if that's the case, I'd rather not be there. So we'll see," he explained.
"I haven't made a decision yet about the World Cup. Match by match, I'll finish the season, then have preseason, and in six months, I'll see how I feel. Hopefully, I can finish this MLS season strong, have a good preseason in 2026, and then make a decision," he added.
