Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina and one of the all-time greats in football, has just added another incredible milestone to his already legendary career. He’s now the first player ever to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches! The 39-year-old achieved this feat during Argentina's final Group J match against Jordan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His scoring streak kicked off during Argentina's triumphant run in Qatar, where he netted goals against Australia, the Netherlands, and Croatia, and even scored twice in the final against France at Lusail Stadium on December 18, 2022. Fast forward to the 2026 World Cup, and Messi kept the momentum going with a hat-trick against Algeria on June 16, followed by two goals against Austria on June 22, and another goal against Jordan on June 27 (June 28 IST), setting a brand new World Cup record.
In the match against Jordan, Messi came on as a substitute in the 60th minute and made an immediate impact. Just 20 minutes later, he found the back of the net with a beautifully executed free kick in the 80th minute, marking his sixth goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and extending his record-breaking streak to seven straight matches. This goal also marked his 72nd career goal from free kicks, including 12 for Argentina. With this latest achievement, his international goal tally now stands at 123 in 202 appearances, placing him second on the all-time list, just behind Cristiano Ronaldo's impressive 145 goals.
Argentina Wrap Up Group Stage in Style With 3-1 Victory Over Jordan
In a thrilling conclusion to the group stage, defending champions Argentina wrapped things up with a flawless record, defeating Jordan 3-1 and finishing at the top of Group J with three wins out of three. The scoring kicked off in the 19th minute when Giovani Lo Celso delivered a stunning free kick that found the top corner. Shortly after, Lautaro Martínez came close, hitting the crossbar, but Argentina soon earned a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a foul on Nico Paz. Martínez stepped up and coolly slotted it home in the 30th minute, doubling their lead.
Jordan, however, wasn’t going down without a fight. In the 54th minute, Musa Al Taamari capitalized on a well-executed play to net Jordan's only goal, marking the first time Argentina conceded during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite this setback, Argentina maintained control of the match. Lionel Messi, who came off the bench, put the game to bed with a classic free kick that curled beautifully over the wall and into the net, bringing his World Cup goal tally to an impressive 19. With nine points, three wins, and just one goal conceded, Argentina is set to face tournament newcomers Cape Verde in the Round of 32 in Miami on July 4, as they continue their quest to defend their title.
