Lionel Messi is reportedly set to start on the bench in the group stage finale for Argentina against Jordan. The defending champions could most definitely finish as the table toppers in the group and their place in the Round of 32 has been fixed. Argentina will be looking to rest their key players in the fixture against Jordan as it wouldn’t hold much importance for the side. Lionel Scaloni could explore the depth he has in the bench and it would be key for the side in the knockout games. Lionel Messi was on top of his game in his two appearances in the tournament with 5 goals to his name and being on the bench in the final game, wouldn’t bother him much.
Argentina has been in dominant form in the group stages as they secured a 3-0 victory in their opening game against Algeria and a 2-0 victory against Austria in their second game. With a commanding goal difference of 5, it is almost seemingly impossible for any of the other nations to overtake Argentina. Lionel Messi’s absence could affect their usual flow of play but they will be assured that the consequences wouldn’t be fatal. Some of the youngsters who have been warming the bench all tournament could possibly get their first start in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Scaloni expected to explore squad depth against Jordan
The final match of the group stage for the defending champions would be just a formality as they have already booked their spot in the Round of 32 against Cape Verde. Thiago Almada could be one of the players who could step into Lionel Messi’s role in the playmaking area. The Atlanta United playmaker displayed his creative brilliance while setting up Messi for his goal against Austria. Julian Alvarez is already a regular starter in the side but the absence of Lionel Messi in the squad could mean that the Atletico Madrid star could be leading the attack. The void would be a massive one to fill for Argentina but they would be hopeful of backing their youngsters in the game.
Another massive positive for Lionel Scaloni’s side would be the defensive excellence they have showcased with two clean sheets in the tournament. Emiliano Martinez has been rock solid at goal and the opponents have found it difficult to break their defensive line. However, one area of uncertainty would be their composure against the bigger teams in the tournament. Austria and Algeria aren’t exactly the sides they would love to challenge while making a strong case for themselves to defend their title. Argentina would be hoping that they can display similar performances against the bigger teams in the tournament in the latter half of the world cup.
As Argentina gear up to take on Jordan in the final game of their group stage on 28th June at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington. Lionel Messi could potentially come on as the substitute in the second half of the game and he could make an impact in the final half of the game for Argentina.
