Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that defender Jeremie Frimpong is ruled out until mid-September due to hamstring injury. Frimpong, 24, made his Premier League debut in Liverpool’s 4-2 victory over Bournemouth last week, and he got substituted during 59th minute. He is now set to miss upcoming league fixtures against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Monday and Arsenal at Anfield the following Sunday. Arne Slot explained that the medical team recommended his withdrawal, believing the Netherlands international was experiencing difficulties.
During the pre-match conference, Slot joked and stated, "I think I got criticised for taking him off, didn't I? It had nothing to do with how he played, but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring - and by we, I mean the medical staff. It was a good call to take him off. We expect to have him back after the international break." The Premier League will restart after the international break on September 14 when Liverpool face Burnley at Turf Moor.
Arne Slot left with Curtis Jones to play for Liverpool against Newcastle
Since Jeremie Frimpong is injured, Arne Slot will be short of natural options at right-back with Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez also expected to be unavailable. This will leave Slot having one option, to hand over the duty to Curtis Jones. It is important to remember that Jones, who began on the bench against Bournemouth before coming on late, has slipped down the midfield pecking order, but this situation could hand the England international a chance to start. Jones made 44 appearances with three goals and four assists for Liverpool.
Earlier, Liverpool signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5 million in May, to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who moved to Real Madrid. Northern Ireland’s Conor Bradley only rejoined first-team training on Thursday, while Slot revealed that Joe Gomez, who faced several long-term injuries in the past, was unable to train for three consecutive days after coming on late for striker Hugo Ekitike against Bournemouth.
