Liverpool were on the verge of signing English defender Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day for £35 million at the start of this month until his current club Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal very late on. Just over a week after the transfer saga played out on September 1, which left Marc Guehi angry, the latest development in regard to Liverpool’s pursuit of the defender has come into the picture.

As per the report published in The Standard in the UK, it is understood that Liverpool have decided to wait for Marc Guehi, 25, to become available in the transfer market as a free agent next summer rather than looking to sign him in the January transfer window in 2026. The current contract of Marc Guehi with Crystal Palace is set to run out on June 30, 2026, and just six months into it, he will be eligible to sign pre-transfer agreement with clubs.

Oliver Glasner insisted Crystal Palace to not let Marc Guehi go without replacement

It was on transfer deadline day earlier this month when Marc Guehi had completed a medical with Liverpool, getting ready to join them before Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner insisted the club not let him go. He also told them about leaving the London-based club with immediate effect if they decide to let the English defender join Liverpool in the summer transfer window without a satisfactory replacement.

On the same day, Crystal Palace were close to signing Brazilian defender Igor Julio from Brighton, but the move didn’t go through due to issues with medical proceedings of the player. With Marc Guehi staying at his current club for at least till the end of 2025, it will be interesting to see how the officials will sort out the newly established dynamic between him and Oliver Glasner.

The club football season will resume later this week after the completion of international break wherein Crystal Palace are set to take on Sunderland in a Premier League clash on Saturday, September 13, at the Selhurst Park in London.
