Head coach Darren Bazeley selected a 26-player New Zealand squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, captained by Nottingham Forest forward Chris Wood. The official squad features three goalkeepers, nine defenders, eleven midfielders, and four forwards. The “All Whites” selection had been no less than a miracle. Ranking the lowest 85th, New Zealand made headlines as they made their first appearance in 16 years. Unlike previous cycles where Oceania champions were forced to enter an intercontinental playoff against much stronger confederations (like South America or CONCACAF), New Zealand won the sole direct slot. They secured their spot in North America with an undefeated run, defeating teams like Tahiti, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.
In their last appearance in 2010, they were the only undefeated team in the competition, finishing with three draws, they are yet to actually win a game in this tournament. With new Fifa rules in play, New Zealand can be an underdog of Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and Iran. Although chances might be slim but we know how upsets are not rare in World Cups. Captain Chris Wood and defender Tommy Smith entered this tournament as the only New Zealand players to ever feature in two different World Cup editions.
Key players like Liberato Cacace (Wrexham), Marko Stamenić (Swansea City), and Tyler Bindon (Nottingham Forest) bring a level of tactical maturity and physical endurance needed to compete on the global stage. To compete against teams in Group they have to have a strong midfield and retain possession against high pressing teams like Egypt and Iran wich players like Jacob Bell can handle. Players like Eli Just and Ben Waine for strong finishing across goal line along with Woods are much needed.
