Several major cricketing superstars have relinquished their IPL captaincy after difficult or unsuccessful stints, either due to poor team performance or their own declining form.
Here are some of the biggest names who stepped down or were replaced under these circumstances:
Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians)
The Stint: 2008 – 2011
Despite individual batting brilliance and taking the team to the 2010 finals, MI failed to win the trophy and missed the playoffs in the IPL 2011 season. Citing the heavy mental toll and pressure of leading the high-profile team, Sachin Tendulkar stepped down right before the 2012 season to focus entirely on his batting. He handed over the captaincy to Harbhajan Singh.
Ricky Ponting (Mumbai Indians)
The Stint: 2013 (First half of the season)
Australia’s legendary captain, Ricky Ponting was bought to lead MI to its first title in 2013. However, he encountered a massive slump in his personal batting form, scoring just 52 runs across 6 innings. Realising his form was hurting the team's composition, Ponting made the selfless decision to drop himself from the playing XI entirely and step down as captain. He handed the reins to Rohit Sharma, who famously led MI to their maiden title that very year.
Kumar Sangakkara (Kings XI Punjab / Deccan Chargers)
The Stint: 2010 (KXIP) & 2011 – 2012 (Deccan Chargers)
Taking over KXIP from Yuvraj Singh, Kumar Sangakkara struggled to maintain winning momentum. He moved to Deccan Chargers, where the team finished near the bottom of the table. His IPL captaincy win percentage sat at a low 34.04% across 47 matches. Facing poor collective results and finding it difficult to anchor the team's foreign player quota effectively, he dropped himself and handed over leadership duties to Cameron White mid-season in 2012.
David Miller (Kings XI Punjab)
The Stint: 2016 (First 6 matches)
Promoted to lead the franchise in 2016, "Killer Miller" suffered immense pressure. The team endured a horrific start, losing 5 out of their first 6 games, while his explosive batting form completely disappeared. In a bid to rescue Punjab's disastrous season, the team management intervened mid-season, replacing David Miller with Indian opening batter Murali Vijay to relieve the South African of his leadership burden.
Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
The Stint: 2013 – 2021
Virat Kohli led RCB for nearly a decade through immense highs and lows. Despite unmatched individual batting records, the elusive IPL trophy never arrived, and the team faced recurrent struggles with bowling balance and playoff qualification. Prior to the conclusion of the 2021 season, Kohli publicly announced he would step down as captain at the end of the year, citing the need to manage his immense workload and create space for a fresh leadership transition.
Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants)
The Stint: 2025 – 2026
Rishabh Pant was acquired by LSG for an all-time record ₹27 crore at the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Tasked with delivering a championship, the campaign completely derailed. LSG failed to make the playoffs in 2025, and crashed to a disastrous 10th-place finish in IPL 2026, winning only 4 out of 14 matches. Pant managed just 10 wins from 28 games in charge while his batting fluency dipped significantly. Following the conclusion of the 2026 season, Pant formally approached the franchise management and requested to step down from leadership duties. Global Director of Cricket Tom Moody confirmed the franchise accepted his resignation to initiate a complete team rebuild.i
