Newcastle United have reached an agreement worth £55 million to sign forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford. Earlier, Brentford stood firm on their demand for a fee close to £60 million, even though the striker is in the final year of his contract. However, on Monday morning, they accepted Newcastle United’s latest offer. This deal comes a day after the 28-year-old released a statement on social media, accusing Brentford of “unfairly blocking” his move to St James’ Park. Before this, Newcastle had seen bids of around £40 million rejected.
Brentford have secured a 25% sell-on clause for Yoane Wissa, while Newcastle United will only pay half of the fee upfront. Although the agreement was finalized on deadline day, the Tyneside club will be relieved to have completed the signing in time, especially given a significant transfer development elsewhere in the Premier League. Newcastle United signed this deal after Liverpool agreed to pay a record fee of £125 million excluding the add-ons for striker Alexander Isak.
I feel compelled and want to leave Brentford: Yoane Wissa
Wissa, before leaving the club and signing the deal, issued a statement on his official Instagram account, stating his intention about leaving the club. "I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window, I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford. I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer." Since he joined Brentford for an £8.5m deal from Lorient in 2021, he scored 49 goals in 149 appearances, which includes 19 Premier League matches.
Along with the Democratic Republic of the Congo forward, Newcastle United also signed a second striker a few days back. The club signed Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £70 million. Meanwhile, Brentford also had to let go of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United for £65 million. Besides, the club also saw the departure of their manager Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur and captain Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal.
