The FIFA World Cup is one of those monumental sporting events and it always has had many emotions involved in the making. Teams prepare themselves intensively months prior to the tournament and it is a long awaited dream for many of the world’s biggest players. Most of the intense emotional moments in the FIFA World Cup take place in the knockout stages or in the Finals. Missing the FIFA World Cup title by a whisker is often a very difficult pill to swallow for the players and there have been many emotional moments in the tournament that have pushed the fans to tears. Here are the 7 most emotional moments in the FIFA World Cup history:
1)Roberto Baggio’s penalty miss against Brazil
Most famously called,”The man who died standing” and Roberto Baggio’s pose after missing the spot kick is still used as one of the most heartbreaking poses in the history of football. Italy and Brazil went head-to-head in the finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup and Roberto Baggio was the talisman for Italy. He was handed the most decisive penalty of the game to keep the hopes of Italy alive but he sent it over the crossbar. Roberto Baggio was left shattered as he looked down to the ground in despair as he couldn’t just keep his composure.

2)Paul Gascoigne’s unfortunate second yellow
The 23-year-old Paul Gascoigne was a key player in the England side in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. In one of the most fierce battles of the tournament between England and West Germany, Gascoigne conceded a straight yellow card off a foul and that pushed him into a deep realisation. He was already under a yellow card that he conceded previously in the tournament and that would result in him missing the next match, which is the World Cup Final. Paul Gascoigne broke down emotionally and he was crying as he exited the field.
3) Asamoah Gyan and Ghana's heartbreak
In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Ghana became the first-ever African team to reach the World Cup Semi-Final. The African fans were so excited to see their team take on Uruguay but the last few seconds gave them a massive heartbreak. Luis Suarez infamously was forced to commit a handball to clear the ball from the goalline and it was a definite goal that he stopped. Asamoah Gyan shouldered the responsibility to take the kick from the spot but he ended up hitting the crossbar. The fans were left devastated in the stands as they witnessed probably the most bizarre ending.

He missed the initial games due to a knee injury and then he scored a hat-trick in the Semi-Finals to take his side through to the Finals. Pele won the first-ever World Cup for Brazil and it was a historic moment for the nation. Pele saw his childhood dream coming true as he was flooded with tears in the middle of the ground and his teammates rushed onto the field.
5) Lionel Messi completes his silverware cabinet
In the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Argentina took on France and the entire footballing world awaited Lionel Messi to get his hands on the World Cup. It was one of the most eventful finishes in the history of the tournament as Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick to almost spoil the party. The scoreline at the end of extra time couldn’t separate the two sides with three goals each for both the sides. 6)James Rodríguez comforted by his conquerors
In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Columbia had a different kind of flair in the World Cup as James Rodrigues led the side. James Rodrigues displayed some brilliant performances in the FIFA World Cup and that was something really special in the World Cup. But their dream came to an unfortunate end with the hosts, as Brazil knocked them out in the Quarter-Finals. David Luiz scored a terrific freekick to break the tie and that was one of the best goals in the FIFA World Cup.
7) The tragic story of Andrés Escobar
In the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, the Colombian defender Andres Escobar faced an immense tragedy. Colombia suffered an early exit in the tournament when Escobar accidentally deflected the ball into his own net. That was a heartbreaking moment for the side as they entered into the tournament with much hype. Just ten days after returning home to Medellín, Escobar was confronted outside a nightclub and shot six times in what was widely believed to be done by powerful gambling syndicates who had lost millions on the tournament. His death remains the darkest, most profoundly tragic chapter in World Cup history.
