The Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham came to an end on August 8. The quadrennial event whose motto was "games for everyone" this year saw as many as 72 countries take part in the event and while several proven performers finished on the podium, the event also saw a few major disappointments.

As expected, it was Australia once again who dominated the medals tally as they eventually topped the charts with a total of 178 medals including 67 gold, 54 bronze and 57 silver. Meanwhile, India finished fourth on the tally with a total of 61 medals- 20 golds, 15 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Here in this article, we will have a look at 5 of the major disappointments at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

1. Lovlina Borgohain

Perhaps the biggest name in the list owing to her reputation as an Olympic medallist is that of Lovlina Borgohain. The Indian boxer failed to live up to the expectation and her journey in the Commonwealth Games 2022 was rather short-lived as she was knocked out of the quarterfinals where she lost to Wales' Rosie Eccles. With her, India potentially lost out on a medal as she was being considered as one of the biggest medal hopes from the country.

2. Manika Batra

Somdev Devvarman

Manika Batra was a massive blow at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Last time around at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast, Batra had returned with as many as four medals and had set the expectations high. While India were hoping for a similar performance from the star paddler, she failed to come close to that performance as she lost in women's team, singles, mixed doubles and women's doubles, implying a medal-less return to India.

3. England netball team

The other major disappointment at the Commonwealth Games was the England netball team. The English side had headed into this year's games as the defending champions. However, not only were they outclassed 51-60 in the semifinals by the current world number 1 Australia, they were then beaten by New Zealand in the bronze medal match. The Kiwis handed them a 48-55 defeat.

4. New Zealand women's hockey team

The other big disappointment at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham was the New Zealand women's hockey team. The Black Sticks ended their campaign without a medal. While they were beaten by England in the semifinal, in the bronze medal match they were handed a defeat by a lower-ranked Indian team. They failed to score even once after converting the initial penalty stroke. India, by contrast, scored twice and won the bronze medal.

5. Hima Das

Hima Das

Hima Das failed to even make it to the 200 m finals at the Commonwealth Games 2022. While she has often been regarded as one of the finest sprinters, Das has repeatedly failed to make it count in big events like the Commonwealth Games. 0.01 second was the distance between Das and a place in the final. She would want to make up for it in the events lined up ahead but her performance at the CWG could be termed a disappointment.
