Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo ended the 2023 calendar year as the world’s top goal scorer after scoring his 54th goal of the year in Al Nassr’s 4-1 win over Al Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League. His 54th came across his club - Al Nassr and national side Portugal, to beat Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.
The 38-year-old capped his 54th in his 59th game, scoring in the 92nd minute after Marcelo Brozovic, Aymeric Laporte and Otavia’s strikes had put Al Nassr in control of the game on Saturday, 30th December. Notably, it is the fifth time that the forward will finish the year as the world’s top scorer, having previously done in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
After scoring his 54th of the year, the star player took to social media to share pictures from his last game of year. “54 - I’ll say when it’s finished! Thanks, team!” he captioned the post.
CR7 after the game in an interview with Saudi media, SSC Sports Radio said, “I’m very happy, it was a good year for me as an individual and as a collective. I cored so many goals, I helped the team a lot at Al-Nassr and for the national team. I feel good, I feel happy and next year I will try to do it again.”
With the win, Al Nassr will stay at second place in the Saudi Pro League standings, with 46 points from 19 games. They are just seven points behind the table leader Al Hilal.
