Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has called star India player Virat Kohli selfless, citing the legend’s Test captaincy stint for India. Kohli, who led Team India in red-ball cricket for more than six years, never lost any home series as skipper. During his leadership tenure, India looked sensational in Test cricket with 40 wins, 17 losses, and 11 drawn games in 68 Tests. Captaining the side at home, he got success on 24 instances in 31 outings, which highlights how remarkable he was as captain. In overseas conditions, he led India to 16 triumphs in 36 games.
While playing at home, Kohli emphasised on getting turning tracks from the pitch curators. Highlighting this fact, Finch said that the batting legend got spin-friendly surfaces in India despite knowing that those pitches would trouble him as well. Appearing on JioStar, Finch remarked, "What really stands out to me about Virat's leadership is that you can look at his numbers now and say they're not as good as they were five years ago. But he was playing on some wickets in India that were spinning hugely from day one. It was about putting your own ego aside to say, 'What's the best thing for my team right now to win a Test match against this opposition?"
Former Australia opener also added, "They could have rolled out some flat wickets and said, 'I'm going to cash in on my own runs and make sure that my record stacks up with some of the all-time greats,' but he put his own ego aside and said, 'I want what's best for my team to win this match’.”
Virat Kohli fans couldn’t see him bat for RCB on May 17
Virat Kohli supporters were expecting him to be in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, but heavy rain in the city forced the umpires and match referee to abandon the game and distribute one point each to both sides.
Kohli’s fans were excited to pay tribute to him following his retirement from cricket’s longest format, donning India whites. However, the match didn’t happen and his supporters went back home disappointed. RCB will next take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Bengaluru on May 23.
