Cricketer Abhishek Sharma’s father and former Ranji Trophy player Rajkumar Sharma expressed his joy following his son’s stellar 135-run knock against England in the fifth T20I, played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Riding on the left-handed batter’s second T20I ton, Team India registered a 150-run victory in the contest and sealed the five-match competition with a 4-1 margin.
While Abhishek was achieving some scintillating feats, his mother and sister were among the spectators at the stands. Abhishek played a 135-run innings off just 54 deliveries and his innings was studded with 20 boundaries (13 sixes and seven fours). Following Abhishek’s sensational innings, his father didn’t shy away from thanking fans for their overwhelming support.
Talking to IANS, Rajkumar said, “My daughter and wife were there (in Mumbai) to watch Abhishek batting live. I saw it on TV. It was really proud moment for us. I can’t express my delight, thanks to everyone who supported him.”
Abhishek shatters strings of records
Abhishek’s phenomenal performance helped him break several batting feats. With his ton, he became India batter with the highest T20I score in an innings. The southpaw shattered Shubman Gill’s record of 126 runs that came against New Zealand at the distinguished Narendra Modi Stadium in February 2023. He struck his 17-ball fifty and became the player with the second-fastest half century in the shortest format of the sport, after his mentor Yuvraj Singh, who completed a 12-ball fifty against England in T20 World Cup 2007.
The 24-year-old completed his century in just 37 balls and added his name to the record books as the second-fastest centurion, following Rohit Sharma’s 35-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017. His knock was studded with 13 maximums that got him in the top spot on the list of Indians with most sixes in a T20I innings. He surpassed Rohit Sharma’s record of 10 sixes against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017.
