The Indian women’s team have qualified for the AFC U20 women’s Asian Cup for the first time in about 20 years after displaying some. The Indian tigresses remained unbeaten in the Group D campaign. India showcased a splendid performance throughout the tournament against Indonesia (0-0), and Turkmenistan (7-0), before defeating hosts Myanmar (1-0) to qualify for the U20 Women’s Asian Cup.
Another highlight was that the Indian team did not concede a single goal throughout the entire tournament. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) were delighted with the performances of the Indian Women’s team and their qualification. In order to express their happiness, the AIFF announced a winning bonus of $25k i,e. INR 21.9 Lakhs to the U20 National team players, coaches and support staff. The AIFF remains fully committed to ensuring the best possible preparation for the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, scheduled to be held in Thailand in April 2026.
Women’s football witnessing gradual developments due to initiatives being taken by AIFF
The AIFF expressed its gratitude to FIFA for their support in conducting the women’s youth leagues for the U20s and the seniors. As stated in the official handles of the AIFF, “The AIFF, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), has undertaken several initiatives to strengthen the grassroots and youth structures in women’s football. One such initiative is the ASMITA Women’s Football Leagues, which witnessed the successful conduct of 155 leagues across the country from 2023 to 2025 at the U13, U15, and U17 levels.”
The number of registered female footballers in India has seen a 232% increase over the last year due to the amount of efforts being taken by the AIFF over the development of women’s football in our country. Opportunities for the AIFF to arrange quality opponents to play preparatory matches are also being looked at to provide the players with world-class exposure to excel in the crunch moments. The Blue tigresses will be looking to create a new chapter in the history of Indian football.
