The Indian football team, which has been undergoing massive shift, on Friday, August 1, announced former India footballer and professional manager Khalid Jamil as the head coach of the senior men’s national team. While Khalid was one of the top contenders to take the position, alongside the likes of Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic, was selected to take the position on Friday.

It is to be noted that Khalid, is set to take over the role from Manolo Marquez, who stepped down from the position last month after a mutual agreement with AIFF following disastrous performance by the team under his rein. The 48-year-old currently manages Indian Super League (ISL) side Jamshedpur FC.

Khalid Jamil appointed Indian men’s football team’s head coach

Taking to X, the Indian Football Team confirmed Jamil’s appointment writing, “The AIFF Executive Committee, in the presence of the Technical Committee, has approved the appointment of Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the Senior India Men's National Team.” The selection of the former Indian player comes after a selection process led by former strike IM Vijayan.

Notably, Jamil’s tenure will begin with the Central Asia Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup, scheduled place in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan from August 29. His appointment marks the return of an Indian to the top job after more than a decade, with Savio Medeira being the last to hold the position from 2011 to 2012.

Speaking of Jamil, the 48-year-old was born in Kuwait and represented India as a midfielder. He began his coaching journey in 2009 with Mumbai FC, which is also where he concluded his playing career. In 2016, Khalid Jamil moved to Aizwal FC, and led them to a historic I-League title the following year.
