The Indian hockey team suffered a massive jolt after star player Amit Rohidas was handed a one-match ban after he was shown the red card during their quarterfinals match against Great Britain at the Paris Olympics 2024. Forcing his one-match suspension, Rohidas will not appear in the semifinals match, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 6.

It is to be noted that Rohidas, who is India’s key player was dribbling in the midfield when his stick hit the opponent team’s player and was soon shown a red card after a review from the referee in the second quarter. His suspension implies that India will field only 15 players, which comes as a setback at a crucial juncture of the Summer Games.

“Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4. The suspension affects match no. 35 (India’s semi-final match against Germany), where Amit Rohidas will not participate and India will play with a squad of 15 players only,” FIH in its statement wrote.

Hockey India files an appeal against Rohidas’ suspension

However, Hockey India, the key organisation, regulating the Indian hockey team has raised an appeal into the matter with the FIH. Moreover, the Indian body has also raised concerns about the quality of umpiring and decision-making during the match against Great Britain.

“These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in the future matches,” Hockey India’s official statement read, as quoted by NDTV Sports.

Meanwhile, a source told PTI, “Amit has been banned/suspended for one match by the tournament director. Hockey India has now appealed against this ruling and the appeal will be put forth before the FIH Jury Bench.

The Harmanpreet Singh-led side will take on Germany in the semifinals after they defeated Great Britain 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out. On the other hand, Germany are coming into the crucial match after 3-2 win over Argentina in the men’s quarterfinals on Sunday, August 4.
