Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews announced retirement from international Test cricket after serving his national side for 16 years from 2009 to 2025. Back in 2009, the right-handed batter broke into the red-ball format of the sport against Pakistan in Galle. He is one of the most successful batters for Sri Lanka in cricket’s longest format as he is set to conclude his career as the third-highest run-getter for his national side, following legendary batters such as Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. The veteran also stands fourth on the chart of Sri Lanka players with most Test games. He will play the final Test of his career against Bangladesh in Galle from June 17 to 21.

In 2014, Mathews produced a memorable knock of 102 against England at Lord’s, London. With this innings, he became the eighth Sri Lanka batter to notch up a ton in the iconic venue. Mathews struggled with his bat in his recent Test matches for Sri Lanka. In the two-match Test series against Australia at home, he scored only 125 runs in four innings at an average of 31.25.
