Star India batter Shubman Gill will be seen batting at number four for India in the upcoming five-match Test series in England, claimed a report from a popular media publication outlet. With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) set to announce Team India for the red-ball assignment in English conditions, eyes are set on the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel. After the Test retirement of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Team India fans are keen to witness who’s going to fill the captaincy boots of Rohit and number four batting position, where Kohli served the team for 11 years. As per several reports, Gill can be trusted with the captaincy mantle.
In the latest development, Cricbuzz has asserted Gill can be demoted in the batting order to replace legendary Kohli at number four. While batting in the middle-order position, legendary Sachin Tendulkar achieved massive success from 1992 to 2013. Noting the fact, Gill will be expected to justify his role in the position by continuing the work batting maestros Tendulkar and Kohli left. If the aforementioned report becomes reality, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sai Sudharsan can be seen batting at the top order.
Shubman Gill will have to prove himself as Test batter in England
Shubman Gill’s Test record is far from impressive in English conditions. Playing three matches in the European nation, he has scored only 88 runs in six innings of three matches at a disheartening average of 14.66. This time, eyes will be set on him how he fares against the Ben Stokes-led side in their backyard.
Gill didn’t have great outings in India’s previous Test series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 held down under. Appearing in three games, he could score 93 runs in five innings. However, forgetting his previous failures, he will look to come heavily on England bowlers in the much-awaited series.
