Former India captain Anil Kumble has advised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to appoint Jasprit Bumrah captain of Team India for the upcoming five-match Test series in England. After Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement, eyes are set on BCCI as to who they will trust for the leadership role in the upcoming Test assignment. There are some reports that claim Shubman Gill is the strongest contender for the top post. Amidst these developments, legendary spinner Kumble possesses the opinion that India should trust Bumrah’s leadership for the crucial red-ball series against the English side.

Anil Kumble feels India should try Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy prowess for the series and note how he fares. “Maybe just for this series (against England) go with Bumrah, and then see how his fitness is. I know it's not easy being a fast bowler. He's had injuries, he was on a break after the Australia series, and is only returning in this IPL. But I'd still go with Bumrah," said Kumble while speaking to ESPNcricinfo.

Jasprit Bumrah looked decent as captain in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Jasprit Bumrah looked fine in the leadership role in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 down under. Under the speedster, the two-time World Test Championship (WTC) finalists hammered the hosts Australia by 295 runs in the first Test held in Perth and kicked off the series confidently.

In the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), he donned the leadership role again but missed the crucial phases of the match due to his back issues. India lost that game by six wickets. Since then, India haven’t played any Test match. In England, India will be expected to give tough competition to Ben Stokes and his men, who won a Test series in New Zealand after 17 years in January 2025. On the other hand, India registered their last couple of red-ball competitions in a humiliating manner, which included getting white-washed against New Zealand at home for the first time and fail to retain the BGT after 10 years.
