Team India lost by six runs against Bangladesh in a dead rubber match on Friday, however, they have already qualified for the Asai Cup 2023 final. Ahead of their final against Sri Lanka, Team India have called up Washington Sundar as a backup for injured all-rounder Axar Patel, who is likely to miss the final battle in the continental showpiece.
The Men in Blue failed to chase an average total of 266 runs against Bangladesh in the final Super Fours clash at the Asia Cup 2023. While Shubman Gill smashed a century, Axar Patel was the second-highest scorer with 42 off 34 balls including two sixes and three fours.
The 29-year-old Axar was close to keeping India's unbeaten record intact in the Asia Cup 2023, however, the team's hope ended with his dismissal in the penultimate over. Team India will miss the services of their spin all-rounder Axar Patel, which reportedly forced them to call up Washington Sundar to feature in India's squad for the Asia Cup 2023 final. According to Cricbuzz, the 23-year-old Sundar has been called up as a cover for injured Axar Patel in the Indian squad.
Earlier on Saturday, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik also hinted at Sundar's involvement in India's squad for the final against Sri Lanka. Karthik took to X and wrote, "Washington Sundar bumped into me at the airport Guess where he's off to Twitter ???"
Sundar last played an ODI in January this year against New Zealand in a home series but failed to feature in Team India's provisional 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 in India scheduled to be held from October 5 to November 19.
