Having kept a firm hold on the match after bowling out England on 236, Australia maintained an impressive lead of 237 runs before the hosts started batting in the second innings of the second Test of Ashes. However, Australia started the match on a chaotic note as their skipper and leading wicket-taker in first Test, Pat Cummins had to skip the match after he came in close contact with a Covid-19 positive individual in a restaurant a day before while Hazelwood had already been ruled out due to injury.

In the absence of first choice bowlers, Jhye Richardson and debutant Michael Neser got an opportunity to be in the team and were eager to make the mark. Meanwhile, Richardson, besides his bowling, drew limelight for his torn shoes as well, and the video of him bowling in such a situation went viral. Notably, the slow motion replay showed that the pacer’s toe thumb is coming out as he lands his foot for bowling. Some taping was also spotted in front of his shoes, which indicated that Richardson already knew about his shoes’ conditions but still decided to wear it.

However, Richardson's instance is not the first of its kind as bowlers adopt such tricks to intentionally create a hole as it helps them to land properly. Meanwhile, Australia are cruising towards their yet another victory as the visitors finished their first innings at 236 for 10, providing a massive lead of more than two hundred runs for the Aussies. Joe Root along with Dawid Malan tried their best to stabilize the innings with the partnership of 138 runs, but as the duo departed, England's hopes of scoring a decent total also diminished, turning things around again in Australia's favor.
