On day one of the fourth test match between England and India, after being asked to bat first; Indian openers appeared to be in good touch. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal batting at their own pace were mounting runs and increasing the pressure on English bowlers for their first breakthrough. The 94 runs partnership by Rahul and Yashasvi got over in the 30th over, which brought Sai Sudharsan to the crease. Sudharsan has been given another chance in the series as Karun Nair was dropped from the playing eleven.

His debut at the Headingley didn’t go as planned as he scored zero and 30 in both the innings, hence he appeared nervous initially. Starting with a defensive approach he did not touch anything outside off-stump and restricted strokeplay. Stuck on 3 off 18 balls, Sai Sudharsan drove a Brydon Carse delivery but rashly took off before the ball passed the fielder. With Yashasvi Jaiswal still in his crease at the non-striker’s end, the risky move nearly cost India, as a sharp fielding effort could have dismissed Sudharsan or the set Jaiswal. “Sai, ball jaane toh de yaar" (Sai, at least let the ball go past the fielder before taking off), said Jaiswal as captured on stump-mic.

Yashasvi Jaiswal did a comeback after low scores at Lord’s Test

After the low scores in both the innings of the Lord’s test match, Yashasvi Jaiswal made a remarkable comeback at Old Trafford. The southpaw scored a fifty, with an approach of continuity in scoring runs even after KL Rahul’s dismissal. Jaiswal's scampered single brings him his eighth 50-plus score against England, in just his 16th innings against them. But he was soon dismissed by Liam Dawson, who ended his eight year wait for a test wicket. Jaiswal, in an attempt to defend a good-length outside off stump ball edged it to Harry Brook who was standing as a slip. Jaiswal and Sudharsan put on 26 runs before England picked up their second wicket.

Jaiswal's dismissal brought out the middle skipper Shubman Gill. But he also went back to the pavilion, dismissed LBW in a ripper by Ben Stokes. According to statistics by ESPNcricinfo, after his Edgbaston epic Gill has scored 34 runs in three innings and it was the third time that Gill has been out to a seamer while not playing a shot in Test cricket. India finished day one at the score of 264 runs for the loss of four wickets with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the crease.
