As Bangladesh prepares for their upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto emphasized that the team is already mentally shifting focus from domestic cricket to the longer format. With the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) ongoing currently, Shanto acknowledged that the quick turnaround doesn’t leave much room for extended preparations. However, he remains optimistic that the training sessions in Sylhet, ahead of the first Test, will provide ample time for the players to adjust. Shanto underlined the importance of maintaining a serious approach, regardless of the opponent. He stressed that Zimbabwe should not be underestimated, pointing out that Bangladesh treats every opponent with the same level of respect and preparation.
According to him, the mentality towards international cricket remains constant because every match presents its own set of pressures and demands. Reflecting on Bangladesh’s recent progress in Test cricket, Shanto noted the positive strides the team has made, particularly over the last year when they secured four Test victories. He views the series against Zimbabwe as an ideal opportunity to continue building Bangladesh’s reputation in the format. With six Test matches scheduled for the remainder of the year, including this series, the captain believes this is the perfect time for the team to gain consistency and develop their Test cricket credentials.
Shanto expresses belief in team’s ability to transition smoothly to red-ball cricket
Addressing concerns about transitioning from white-ball domestic cricket to the traditional red-ball format, Shanto expressed confidence in the squad’s adaptability. He remarked that the players understand the significance of both domestic competitions and international fixtures, and are preparing themselves mentally to meet the different challenges posed by Test cricket.
Bangladesh’s squad will move to Sylhet shortly, where they will undergo final preparations before the series kicks off. The first Test is scheduled to begin on April 20 in Sylhet, followed by the second match in Chattogram on April 28. The team hopes to capitalize on familiar home conditions and carry forward the momentum they’ve been building in the longer format of the game.
