Hours after Australia veteran Steven Smith announced retirement from ODIs, Bangladesh veteran, Mushfiqur Rahim also decided to put down curtains in the 50-over format. Taking to social media, the Bangladesh batter announced retirement from immediate effect after Bangladesh’s forgettable outing in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.

The Bangla Tigers, who were placed in Group A of the Champions Trophy 2025 alongside Pakistan, New Zealand and India, were knocked out of the tournament after their defeat against New Zealand. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side failed to register a single win in the group stage and made an exit, finishing in third place in the group stage.

Taking to social media, the Bangladesh veteran wrote, “I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today." “Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty," he continued.

“The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years," he added.

The 37-year-old’s decision came after “challenging few weeks” where he got scores of 0 and two against India and New Zealand respectively. However, the veteran batter was named in Category A of the Bangladesh central contracts for the 2025 season, but he found it the best possible day to put down curtains from the format.

Speaking of his illustrious career, he has played ODIs for 19 long years after making his debut in 2005 against Zimbabwe in Harare. However, he retires from the format as Bangladesh’s most-capped ODI player, having played 274 matches and scoring 7795 runs at an average of 36.42, registering nine centuries and 49 fifty-plus scores.
