The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced the squad for the women’s team tour to England. While there were some prominent names in the 17-member squad, there was a surprise inclusion in the form of Jhulan Goswami. The veteran Indian pacer has been included in the 17-member ODI squad after missing out on quite a few tours. Notably, the 39-year-old last played for India at the World Cup in March.

Since then, Goswami has been missing from action for India. She was neither included in the squad that toured Sri Lanka earlier this year nor did she take part in the Commonwealth Games. It seemed that just like Mithali Raj, Goswami will also announce her retirement soon. However, the veteran pacer has not announced any such decision but it seems an announcement is around the corner.

With Goswami representing the country at the highest level for more than two decades, it’s reported that the BCCI has decided to honor the veteran pacer with a farewell match and that is the reason she has been included in the ODI squad. An Indian Express report has claimed, “selectors spoke to Jhulan about the Indian team moving on and preparing for the future. In return, the BCCI decided to honour her services to Indian women’s cricket and give her a farewell game.”

Notably, Jhulan Goswami made her India debut in 2002 and represented the country in 12 Tests, 201 ODIs, and 68 T20I in a career that lasted more than two decades. Along with Mithali Raj, she became the face of Indian women’s cricket. The medium pacer became India’s leader with the new ball and took 352 wickets altogether in three formats. Now, the 39-year-old will walk out for the last time in India colors on 24 September at Lord's.
