India's PV Sindhu won her gold medal match against Michelle Li of Canada in the finals of the women's singles event in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Sindhu won the game in two straight sets 21-15, and 21-13.

In the first game of the finale, Sindhu took a confident start as she took a 4-2 lead. The Canadian soon rallied back at 6-6 as both competitors went blow for blow until Sindhu edged ahead with a three-point lead making the score 11-8.

World number seven then built on the momentum as she surged ahead to take the score at 15-9. But soon, Michelle Li clawed back up as she cut short Sindhu's lead to 17-14. Until the Indian turned on the afterburners as she zoomed past to take the first game 21-15.

The second game got off to an intense start as both shuttlers played some intense badminton. The Indian once again took a big lead and entered the mid-game break at 11-6. After the interval, Sindhu came out swinging as she didn't allow her Canadian opponent to get settled by taking consecutive points.

After some long and high-pressure rallies, the 27-year-old held her lead and took the score to 17-12, further taking the game 21-13. Sindhu completed the set of medals with the Gold. Before this final, the world number seven suffered a heartbreaking loss in the finals of the mixed team event against Malaysia.

After that defeat, Sindhu talked about how every member of the team should focus on their individual event and not allow the loss to affect their upcoming games. “Now that the team (event) is over, I think it’s paramount now to focus on the individuals. I’m hoping for the best, I’m hoping for the gold," Sindhu said.

“Individual is individual, so I think everybody should focus on their own now. It’s time to go back and plan and come back stronger. As a team, we did well but now we need to focus individually and make sure that we prepare ourselves, everybody is going to have different matches, at different times, on different days. So, it’s important that the players give their 100 per cent no matter what," she continued.
