India defeated Morocco 3-1 in World Group II tie of Davis Cup 2023 on September 17, Sunday, as Sumit Nagal took down Yassine Dlimi in reverse single’s round. Before that Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri defeated Elliot Benchetrit and Younes Lalami Laaroussi to gain a 2-1 lead against the opponents.
Nagal gained a comforting 6-3, 6-3 win over his opponent, and ensured India’s win in the World Group II tie. Earlier on Saturday, both countries levelled 1-1 as Nagal defeated Adam Moundir 6-3, 6-3 after Mukund Sasikumar slumped 7-6 (4), 5-7, 1-4 to Morocco's Dlimi.
On the other hand, Bopanna drew curtains on his Davis Cup career after gaining a 6-2, 6-1 win with Bhambri over his Moroccan counterparts. This was Bopanna’s 33rd tie which lasted for around one hour and 11 minutes. After the match, the 43-year-old rested his jersey on the court marking the end of his Davis Cup journey.
In his 33 ties, Bopanna emerged victorious in 23 of them, including 13 in doubles. Following the victory, the Bengaluru-born greeted his fans and blew kisses at them. Before the Davis Cup 2023, the tennis star finished as runners up in men’s doubles at the US Open 2023. With their win in the World Group II tie, India have now qualified for the World Group I playoffs, slated to be hosted in February 2024.
