Former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev on Monday, December 9 urged Rohit Sharma doubters to stay away and stood in support of the Team India captain. He opined that Rohit Sharma has the ability to bounce back from setbacks and it would be unfair to judge and question his captaincy after just one bad result in the highly-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.
It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma returned at helm in the second BGT Test after missing the opening Test of the five-match Test series in Perth. While Jasprit Bumrah stood in for Rohit Sharma in the Perth Test, leading India to a dominating 295-run win in the Perth Test, Rohit Sharma did not have a great outing as India succumbed 10-wicket defeat in Adelaide, with the series currently levelled 1-1.
Let’s not doubt Rohit Sharma’s ability: Kapil Dev to doubters
Speaking on Monday after India’s crushing defeat in the Adelaide Test, former India captain Kapil Dev that Rohit Sharma should not be judged on just one performance. “Let’s not doubt Rohit Sharma’s ability to bounce back. He doesn’t have to prove himself. He has done this for many, many years, so let’s not doubt somebody. I won’t doubt him. I hope his form comes back, that’s important,” Kapil Dev said.
“With one or two performances, if you doubt someone’s captaincy, I mean, just six months back when he won the T20 World Cup, you wouldn’t have asked me this question. Let it go, knowing his ability and talent, he will come back. They will come back strongly,” he further added. It is to be noted that Rohit did not have a great outing with the bat as he registered scores of three (off 23 deliveries) and six (off 15 deliveries) in the two innings. Moreover, Rohit Sharma demoted himself to let KL Rahul open with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Adelaide Test after the former had given positive results in the opening Test.
