The Durand Cup, which is also the oldest existing club football tournament in Asia, will return this month for its 132nd edition, after its inception in 1888. This year, the annual tournament will be held in the cities of Kolkata, Guwahati, and Kokrajhar from August 3 to September 3.
Northeast United FC is a fairly new club to the Durand Cup, as it was established in 2014, the same year the ISL came into existence. This time, they will be participating in just their second Durand Cup. Currently, they are being led by Spaniard Juan Pedro Benali, who has experience coaching multiple clubs from all over the world. The club will be eager to start their campaign with a win against Shillong Lajong on Friday.
Talking about Shillong Lajong FC, they have recently tasted success, as they were promoted back to the I-League, after a successful campaign in the 2022–23 season of the I-League 2. Like Northeast United, the Meghalayan club is also yet to get their hands on the Durand Cup, and they too will be desperate to start off their tournament on a positive note.
