The England skipper, Ben Stokes, who is currently leading his team in one of the most popular rivalries against Australia in the Ashes has undoubtedly proven to be one of the sensational findings of all times. The New Zealand-born English cricketer has time and again proved his all-rounding capabilities to the world. On his current assignment in the Ashes, Stokes proved his presence of mind with his unique fielding set-up “Brumbella” to dismiss Usman Khawaja. The 32-year-old cricketer sat in a conversation before the onset of the iconic Ashes clash, where he described his fellow England players in one word.
The interviewer asked Stokes to describe the former England Test captain Joe Root in one word, to which he replied with ‘GOAT’. After that as the interviewer asked how he would describe James Anderson, he came up with the word ‘Old’. Stokes then went on to describe other players one by one, where he termed the English wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow as ‘Tazo’, he called Stuart Broad ‘Tall’. Moving ahead, the captain after thinking for a second, called Ollie Pope ‘Posh Road Man’.
In addition to this, Stokes coined nicknames for other England players as well. Where he called Chris Woakes ‘Pure’, he felt pacer Ollie Robinson is the ‘Future Goat’. Apart from that, he had ‘Rapid’ for Mark Wood and ‘Gun’ for Harry Brook along with ‘Small’ and ‘Argumentative’ for Ben Duckett and Zack Crawley, respectively. The England skipper also felt that Dan Lawrence and Josh Tongue should be named as ‘Geezer’ and ‘Raw’, respectively.
The Test team is currently coached by the former New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum, and the captain of the England team had the perfect nickname for him. Stokes called McCullum ‘Boss’.
By the end of day 3 of Ashes’s first Test, Australia put on a total of 386 in response to England’s score of 393. As another day approached its end, the home team had managed a seven-run lead over their rivals.
