F ormer Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicious drink and drive after he drove into a shop around 9 PM on November 4 (Friday) in Wynyard, Country Durham. The 37-year-old footballer was taken into the custody after his black Land Rover ploughed into a village storefront in Wynyard.
According to reports, local police arrested the man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after he smashed into the front of 'The Village Store' and kept him in police custody until the following day. Reportedly, the shop suffered substantial damage and the occupants of the flat above had to be evacuated.
The store remained closed over the weekend and the fire brigade were called out following the crash on Friday. Cleavland police confirmed that no one suffered any sorts of injuries but still residents had to evacuated from flats above the shop.
"A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, after the black Land Rover Defender he was driving collided with the shop front of the Village Stores. Nobody was hurt in the incident, but substantial damage was caused to the shop and occupants of the flat above had to be evacuated. The man is currently in police custody," read police statement.
As per local media, possible punishments for drink-driving include six months in prison, a fine and a driving ban. Reportedly, if the footballer is convicted, he might have trouble visiting countries abroad, including United States of America.
