Considered as the first undisputed world champion from Britain in the four-belt era, Josh Taylor raced through many fights to reach at the top. His crowning moment came in Las Vegas in 2021 when he defeated Jose Ramirez to unify all four of the major super-lightweight championships. The former winner of World Boxing Super Series however was on a run of some defeats along with the injury concerns in the eye.
Due to the recurring nature of the eye injury, Josh Taylor has retired from boxing aged 34. Taylor (19-3, 13 KnockOuts) said on Monday that he has been forced to retire after taking medical advice. “As it has been publicised before, I’ve had a recurring issue with my eye that unfortunately means now I have to call time on my career or risk losing my eyesight,” he said in a social media post. Taylor further said, “Whilst the fighter in me will always want to box on, I know I have to listen to the medical professionals and save me from myself.”
Josh Taylor won his first world title in his 15th fight of career
Before becoming the undisputed champion in 2021, Josh Taylor went on to win a 2010 Commonwealth Games silver and a gold medal in Glasgow in 2014. He rose through the professional ranks and won his first world title in his 15th bout. With a win in the 2019 World Boxing Super Series, beating Regis Prograis at London, he unified the super lightweight division, picking up the WBA title.
After becoming the UK's first four-belt undisputed champion he began a fierce rivalry with Jack Catterall, winning a contentious defence of his titles in their 2022 fight. Taylor's career ends on a losing trend after points defeats in his last three fights to Ekow Essuman in May, to Catterall in May last year, and to Teofimo Lopez in June 2023. In the message announcing his retirement, Taylor thanked those who supported him through his thick and thin.
